To our valued patients,

Please limit your visits to the clinic for acute and urgent cases only. Email your clinicians for their availability, daily updates and any future appointments you may have, and your clinician will advise you about next steps. Our hours of operation are changing as we are monitoring the Ministry updates.

Chiropodist or Podiatrist – What’s the Difference?

Though both focus on foot care and are regulated by the Ontario Podiatric Medical Association, podiatrists and chiropodists are distinctly different health care professionals. Chiropodists diagnose and treat foot ailments, and primary care physicians often refer patients to them, but you don’t need a referral note to visit a chiropodist on your own. Chiropodists need 7 to 8 years of post-secondary school and training with a certificate from a chiropody program, allowing them to provide clinical services, cast orthotics, and measure for orthotic devices. Many chiropodists also hold an additional bachelor’s degree in science. Learn more about Ontario chiropodists from these professional organizations:

In comparison, a podiatrist can prevent, diagnose and treat foot and ankle conditions medically and surgically. A doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM) has completed an undergraduate program in the sciences at an accredited university, an additional 4 years at an accredited College of Podiatric Medicine, and a hospital-based residency program. Podiatrists in Ontario must pass their comprehensive board exams and the provincial licensing exams.
